La Liga is here. The new season has started this weekend in Spain.
However along with few other things that will be added and emotions. One thing that we will surely be missing is the rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Yes there was no such thing between them and it was just the fans but we all have to agree that was the spicy element. We all loved and wanted. On one side when Cristiano Ronaldo will be making his competitive debut for Juventus. The day before in Serie A against Chiveo. His ex-club Real Madrid will be opening its season on Sunday against Getafe.
For the last nine seasons, it has been impossible to view La Liga and its primary combatants Real Madrid and Barcelona, through a lens that isn’t hugely influenced by the rivalry between the two players.
Both had already lifted the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player.
Both had won the Champions League — Ronaldo with Manchester United and Messi with Barcelona of course by the time the 2009-10 season kicked off.
Few could have predicted, nine years ago, the double onslaught that the record book was about to be hit with. The performances by Messi and Ronaldo over the last nine years have. I believe, morphed into the greatest rivalry in all of sport, at any time in history.
We have been witness to two of the greatest players ever to play the game. Competing in the same league week-in and week-out while representing two clubs whose dominance and rivalry is legendary. Both players were pushed to ever higher levels of performance knowing what the other was capable of.
The only thing that detracted from this amazing and long-running spectacle. Was the emergence of pea-brain fan-boys who viewed every performance by Messi and Ronaldo as a chance to pump up their favorite while diminishing the other.
Fortunately, the latter will fade with time.
For those of us lucky enough to have watched Messi and Ronaldo over the last nine years, the memories will never fade; they will only become more glorious. Let us see what this La Liga seasons brings for its fans this time around.
