Nelson Mandela

From 1994 to 1999 serving as the President of South Africa, an anti-apartheid revolutionary, a political leader and philanthropist. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18th July 1918 – 5th December 2013).

A South-African and country’s first black head of state. The first elected in fully representative democratic election. From 1991 to 1997, he served as president of the African National Congress (ANC).

He is deeply respected in South Africa and is often referred as ‘Madiba’ his Xhosa clan name which is described as ‘Father of the Nation’. It was his undying efforts and actions that landed him in prison for nearly three decades. Internationally and Nationally made him the face of the antiapartheid movement.

It was the year of 1980 when Oliver Tambo introduced a ‘Free Nelson Mandela’ campaign.

His entire life has been an open book to every individual living today. The sufferings that he and his his companions had suffered. All for their believes and making their country a better place to live. His movements and thoughts were more than welcomed by the world. It was his suffering that started with the media and the world giving him all the respect and love he deserved.

He went on to win many global prizes NOBEL PEACE PRIZE being the biggest of them all. He stood for many social causes as well and founded a few organisations as well Nelson Mandela Foundation being the most important and well known.

During his later years he minimized his public appearances and dealings. However he still stood with his thoughts and efforts of spreading peace and making the world a better place to live in.

In the year of 2001 he was treated for prostate cancer and weakened by other health issues. The United Nations in 2009 declared 18th July as ‘Nelson Mandela National Day’. For the contributions to democracy, freedom, peace and human rights around the world by Nelson Mandela. December 5th 2013 he died from a recurring lung infection.
